Once upon a time, it was common for a home audio systems to be packaged in large furniture enclosures. Typically a six foot long enclosure, about 30 inches high on average. Usually a turntable, amp and radio were the main items. A few higher end models included a reel to reel tape deck. There were also models that included an integrated television. A console with a TV, even just a black and white would be well over $500. $4000 or more in today's dollars. Consoles were at an all time high in the 1960s, and kept pace until the early 1970's. The sound quality was quite satisfying on many, if not most consoles.
Unlike many early quality component audio pieces, consoles have not found much love in the used market. In fact, today's used market is flooded with used console stereos. Often free for the taking. There are exceptions, mainly german made consoles from companies like Telefunken, Grundig, and Blaupunkt. Or rare Fisher made consoles. There were even custom made units that included McIntosh electronics, and turntables from Dual, or even Thorens.
The reality for most old consoles, with a few rare exceptions. full restoration doesn't really make sense. Even getting them to a useable state is usually cost prohibitive. Complex changer type turntables that require a skilled technician to bring back. The turntables were hard on records with rather modest ceramic cartridges. It's common for many owners to have a new era amplifier and turntable installed, and connected to the existing speakers.
As for Austin Stereo, we don't service, sell, or buy consoles for reasons above, as well as lack of needed space. We can direct you to service options. Just send us a message.
